Wareham tables Protect Act, ICE resolution

School Committee · Meeting of September 17, 2026

Wareham School Committee tables a Protect Act immigration policy and a related MASC resolution to October 15. After a Massachusetts Association of School Committees ethics workshop, Chair Geoffrey Swett said he'd vote no on a New Bedford-sponsored resolution over its "legal and moral obligation" language, calling it "too political," while member Apryl Rossi, the panel's MASC delegate, agreed to bring an amendment striking the word "moral." Director of Finance Kristin Flynn reported the district spent $36,088,106.79 in fiscal 2026, with special education at 36 percent of the budget against roughly 30 percent of enrollment, and nearly $750,000 spent on substitutes amid a statewide rise in staff leaves. The committee voted 4-0-1 to accept a $2,445 gift from Wareham Media, approved warrants 4-0-1, and split 2-2-1 on continued METCO funding support before voting 3-2 to direct Rossi to abstain at the MASC delegate assembly.
