Wareham Conservation Commission Approves Mark's Cove Wetland Restoration, Issues Fines

Conservation · Meeting of April 15, 2026

Wareham Conservation Commission approves Mark's Cove wetland restoration and levies $1,200 in fines at April 15 meeting. The commission unanimously approved a Notice of Intent from Mass Audubon, the Buzzards Bay Coalition, and Fuss and O'Neill to restore approximately 15 acres of retired cranberry bog at 820 Shady Lane into a functioning wetland and future salt marsh migration corridor, a project funded through a federal NOAA "Making Space" grant with a targeted construction start of late fall 2026. Restoration Ecologist Andrea Jerabeck of Mass Audubon said the project aims to "make space for future salt marsh migration" by removing earthen berms, filling ditches, and restoring natural hydrology, with Fuss and O'Neill's Julianne Busa noting that comparable Nantucket bog restorations achieved 60 percent vegetation coverage within one growing season from buried native seed banks alone.

The commission separately issued $600 fines each to the owner of 2 Wareham Lakeshore Drive and the applicant for 72 Burgess Point Road for unpermitted beach nourishment, improper sand storage, and an unapproved fire pit and gravel driveway. A contested easement deck-and-stairway application at 16 Widows Cove Lane and a tree-removal filing at a Marks Cove Road parcel were both continued to the May 6 meeting pending more detailed plans.
