Sewer Board reviews comprehensive wastewater plan targeting nitrogen reduction

Wareham Sewer Commissioners review comprehensive wastewater management plan targeting nitrogen reduction. The board held a workshop meeting with consultants from GHD to discuss a MEPA-certified plan that recommends wastewater plant upgrades to 3 million gallons per day capacity, sewer system expansion, a fertilizer bylaw, and cranberry bog restoration. Nitrogen sources identified: 43 percent from septics, 20 percent from cranberry bogs, 11 percent from stormwater, 16 percent from plant discharge, and 6 percent from fertilizers.
The town has secured full grant funding for outfall relocation work. WPCF Director Scott Kraihanzel reported the treatment system is operating well with ongoing headworks repairs and odor mitigation improvements.
