Sewer Board Backs Land Lease For Sludge Plant
Water · Meeting of September 10, 2026
Wareham sewer board advances land lease for a regional sludge-processing site. The Board of Sewer Commissioners voted 4-0 to send a Town Meeting article authorizing a lease of up to 30 years on roughly seven acres at its treatment plant, aiming to eliminate what officials put at roughly $650,000 a year in out-of-state sludge-hauling costs. Commissioners separately approved a $111,000 contract with GHD, 90 percent grant-funded by the state's Office of Coastal Zone Management, for a coastal vulnerability study needed to finalize sewer service areas under the town's wastewater plan.
The board also approved a $150,000 Waterline Industries change order and ratified a $106,584.87 GHD change order. Plant staff said an emergency repair to a corroding force main crossing the Onset bridge will begin within a week, with one lane closed during a planned one-day pipe swap. "If we don't do anything like this, we're going to be paying someone else and they're going to be getting the revenue," one commissioner said of the land-lease rationale.
