Wareham Reports First West Nile Virus Detection of Season

A mosquito sample collected in Wareham has tested positive for West Nile virus, the town announced Thursday, marking the season's first confirmed detection and prompting officials to remind residents to guard against mosquito bites as summer draws to a close.

TOWN HALL The Town of Wareham issued a News Flash alert Thursday confirming that a mosquito sample collected locally has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The town did not detail additional spraying or treatment measures in the alert, but the finding puts Wareham among the growing list of Massachusetts communities flagged for WNV activity heading into the Labor Day stretch.

COMMUNITY & ARTS The Wareham Free Library posted its fall slate of programs this week. Musician Meghan Cary will headline the library's Fall Concert Series on Monday, September 28, at 7 p.m. A Fall Family Storytime series will run Tuesdays from September 15 through November 17 at 6:30 p.m., and the Friends of the Wareham Free Library will hold their annual book sale Thursday, September 17, through Saturday, September 19. The library also announced a Cara Bean comics and mindful doodling workshop for teens and tweens on Saturday, September 19, at 11 a.m.
