WAREHAM --
HIGH SCHOOL -- Wareham Middle School has been declared an official Special Olympics Unified Champion School, with Superintendent Dr. Hartley Matheson telling the School Committee on October 1 that the designation recognizes the school's "commitment to meaningful inclusion through unified sports, inclusive leadership and whole school engagement." School Committee member Emily thanked staff and students for the achievement and singled out special education teacher Mr. Dekas for his work supporting the Special Olympics program.
At the high school level, the Unified basketball team opened its season earlier in the week against Westport. Committee members relayed a message from Alton McCain, a former Wareham High School student athlete who now coaches the Unified team, saying Wareham did not win but that "Westport showed great sportsmanship" throughout the game. One committee member called it "the first of many updates on unified basketball" expected this season.
YOUTH LEAGUES -- Wareham Little League has opened registration for its 2026 fall ball season. The league is accepting sign-ups for four divisions: Tee Ball (ages 3 1/2 to 5 1/2), Farm League (ages 6 to 8), Minor League (ages 9 to 12) and Major League (ages 9 to 12). The league says all players will be evaluated for placement in the Minor Division, while the Major Division will hold tryouts, with information to be emailed to families.
